Martin Novak - Handdruck

Although Martin often hears that he is an artist, he considers himself more of a craftsman. For him, it doesn’t really matter. Instead he is more focused on emulating his grandfather: his all-time handicraft hero. First introduced to Europe back in the 18th century, screen printing is a craft which even today still requires agile hands as well as brains. It’s also a craft that finds itself struggling against extinction through new digital techniques.

Keeping a handcraft alive also means fighting a constant struggle with oneself. Martin constantly has to try and go beyond his own boundaries – and the boundaries of the craft – but the results are so rewarding. He enjoys the process of transforming digital images into one-of-a-kind prints.

When people are confronted with the results of his craft for the first time, they’re often very surprised at just what’s possible. Their senses are stimulated and they want to touch, feel and smell the prints. Experiencing something truly handmade has become such a rare occurrence for many people and they’re often amazed by the character and uniqueness of handmade objects.

The future of handcrafted products may be an uncertain one but me, and others like me, are convinced that the unique nature of handmade products will become ever-more important and popular in this age of mass production.

INTERVIEW

Martin Novak - Handdruck

Simply why?

When and where were you born?
1977, Leoben, Steiermark

Where is your life centered at the moment?
Wien

Where is your work centered in the moment?
Wien, 7. Bezirk

How old is your handcraft?

How, when and where did your handcraft find you first?

Is it love? Profession? Faith?........

Please tell me more about the history/origin of your handcraft.

Do you control or change your handcraft or does your handcraft control or change you?

How did your craft develop in the course of the past decades or centuries?

How will your craft and you evolve together in the future?

Which part of the production process do you like best and why?

Which part of the process is the most tricky one?
Also manchmal konstanter, manchmal weniger konstant.

What is the biggest challenge?

Please define crazy
..................................

Are you left or right handed?
Rechtshänder

What is the most important tool for your work, other than your hands?
Mein Gehirn.

How do people react on your handcrafted products?

What is the importance of handcrafts in current times?

Do you consider yourself an artist or a craftsman?

What is your favorite smell? Touch? Taste? Sound? Dream?
Olivenöl, Meerwasser, .*.,++, dub, Haus am Meer

What inspires you most?
Musik, Natur

Who is your personal "handcraft jesus" of all times?
Großvater

History

SCREEN PRINTING

Screen Printing made its first appearance during China’s Song Dynasty which lasted from 960-1279 AD. It wasn’t long before the craft spread from China to Japan and other Asian countries, with craftsmen beginning to experiment with paints and block printing.

Sometime in the late 18th century, the technique was introduced from Asia to western Europe but it wouldn’t be widely used until silk mesh could more easily traded between the West and the East. Only then did this new medium start to become profitable, and with that, much more widely adopted.

In early 20th century England, the craft became a popular way of printing wallpaper – often on fine fabrics such as linen or silk. In 1907, Samuel Simon patented the art of screen-printing in England and throughout the West, screen printers started developing secretive business tactics to ensure that their own specialized techniques didn’t fall into the hands of their rivals.

It wasn’t long before printers began to involve new photo-reactive chemicals in their technique – some used the popular actinic light activated cross linking or hardening or hardening traits of potassium, sodium or ammonium bichromate chemicals with glues and gelatin compounds. These days, the elements used in the process are much less toxic and safer than the bichromates used in the early 20th century and craftsmen enjoy a much larger selection of sensitized emulsion chemicals that they can use to create their own ‘photo-reactive’ stencils.
